Human Trafficking Is Modern Day Slavery

Trafficking in persons is modern-day slavery, involving victims who are forced, cheated or threatened into labor or sexual exploitation. Yearly, nearly 600,000 to 800,000 people, mostly women and children are trafficked internationally, however these numbers does not include the millions that are trafficked within their own countries.

People are forced into trafficking in many ways. Some ways are physical force and false promises are made regarding job opportunities or marriages in foreign countries to persuade victims.

More on HUMAN TRAFFICKING!

Trafficking is very profitable. It is the third largest criminal industry in the world today, after arms and drug dealing, and is the fastest growing. Today owning a slave has never been cheaper. Vulnerable women, children and also men work in fields, homes, restaurants, hotels, and also in the facets of the sex industry. Over time trafficking of women and girls had become the fastest growing enterprises in the world. It was said that over two million women and girls are taken from their homeland/home, and taken into other countries where they are exposed to forced labor, and domestic servitude which is also known as sexual exploitation. The people who are doing this are not only committing a crime of human trafficking but there are also one who are most likely linked to money laundering, drug trafficking, document forgery, human smuggling, rape and torture.

The population of human trafficking may vary, the most recent reports says that about four million men, women and children are brought and sold into slavery each year. Eight hundred thousand to two million women and girls starting as early as age five are trafficked internationally for sexual purposes each year. Also, at any given time twelve point three million women, men and children are enslaved in forced labor, bonded labor, sexual exploitation, involuntary servitude, or domestic servitude. It was investigated by the federal Bureau trafficking and slavery generate approximately nine and a half billion dollars A YEAR!

Trafficking occurs right in front of our eyes but we are too blind to see it. Moreover, the reality of trafficking and slavery remains mostly invisible in many cultures and countries. In the United States, trafficking for labor or the sex trade often occurs right in our local communities. We simply do not see it. Nor do we recognize the women, children, and men who are the victims. These people are treated as criminals or as unwanted workers rather than people with human rights that are being violated. We know that human trafficking is not only a horrifying human rights issue but it is also a big health issue because this causes the spread of HIV-AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases {STD} or Sexually Transmitted Infections {STI}.

There are many causes of Human Trafficking the main ones are; vulnerability due to poverty, relating to survival based decision makings, Lack of education, lack of sustaining work in homeland, cultural factors including equity and equal rights of women, equal rights of children, history of bonded labor, customs of involuntary marriage, inequity related to ethnic, cultural or language demographics, social and political instability including escaping war, persecution, violence, poverty, environmental disasters, or human rights violations. Other causes may come from greed including; exploitation of labor to maintain low cost structures in response to end consumers' demands for very inexpensive products, corporate promotion of cheap human and material goods and services, and Western consumer demand for cheap goods, Traffickers earn billions of dollars in profits every year while victimizing millions of people around the globe, Market demand for commercial sexual exploitation continues to increase, which overwhelmingly impacts women and girls and fuels the growth of human trafficking. This includes first-world and local demand for sex tourism and pornography. Also the last cause is corruption which includes corruption in government, law enforcement and fundamental human values.

There are many forms of risk and abuse that leads to potential heath risks. Some forms of abuse are; murder, physical attacks, torture, physical deprivation, forced vaginal, oral or anal sex, gang rape and degrading sexual acts, forced prostitution, unwanted pregnancy, unsafe or forced abortions, lies, blackmail, legal insecurity and frequent relocations. Although there is a period here this list can go on and on. Some potential health risks are; death, acute/chronic physical injuries, poor nutrition, mal-nutrition, or starvation, fatigue, exhaustion, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, HIV-AIDS or other STD/STI and brain and liver damages and this list also keep going on and on.

Human trafficking is a sick crime that happens at anytime. Using multiple tricks, slave traders target young women and children as victims. In doing, so they often make false promises to these unsuspecting victims in which they promise things from marriage, to housing to job opportunities. When people are desperate and are in need of these things, they are willing to do go with anyone that makes these offers. Sex traders are skilled in this area in which they are able to manipulate people and then take advantage of them.

In the map on the following link, it shows the areas of where the sex slaves come from and where they go to. The light blue represents the area in which the sex slaves are shipped to. The dark blue represents the area in which the sex slaves are shipped to the most. The red area shows the origins of where most of the slaves come from and the pink area shows where others come from. As you can see the United States of America is a very high concentrated place of where the sex slaves are sent to. Russia is also a huge supplier of sex slaves. Due to Human Trafficking, many things are being done along the way to stopping it.

Many acts are being initiated in order to prevent Human Trafficking. The United States passed two acts which are theChildren Today (Protect) Act and the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act. Due to the PRTOECT Act over a dozen convictions of child sex tourists have been made. The Department of Homeland Security also initiated an Operation known as Predator to fight such activities of child pornography, and child sex tourism. Globally, within the past 5 years the prosecution of child offenders and sex traders has increased die to the actions of multiple countries. Over 32 countries have extraterritorial laws to help resolve this issue.

Human Trafficking is and in-humane crime that exists today that robs people of their lives and dignity. Human Trafficking occurs world-wide and is the fastest growing crime. Today, many acts has been passed in attempt to stop Human Trafficking, The United States has also passed over 3 acts, but it takes more than just one to stop this crime. Other people need to take action and help to stop this cruel activity that occurs right beneath our very eyes. The results of these cruel acts or unspeakable and should not be.
